There one thing to consider when you purchase made to measure curtains. How far past the bottom edge of the window do you want to go! Most curtains are 1″ from the flooring edge and measurements on the side of the windows do not exceed 2″ to 3″.
When purchasing or ordering your made to measure curtains you need to take into consideration how much extra curtain you will need. Not only do you need to know how far across the window is but how much of the curtain will wrap around the end of the curtain rod. Your typical curtain rod will have a wrap of 1″ to 2″.
You will also need to decide if you want the curtain to be bunched up along the rod when they are closed or do you want a smooth even curtain across the window. If you want the made to order curtain to be bunched up add an additional one-half of your measurement to the total dimensions.
Example of bunched up curtain:
36″ X 60″ add at least one-half of the across measurement, so your new measurement should be 54″ X 60″
If the material is thick and/or has a blackout liner, do not increase your measurement or you will find it very hard to open the curtains all the way. Keep your look smooth.
When you are measuring from the top to the bottom make sure you are adding 1″ to the top measurement to ensure you are above the window. If you are not going to the floor you will want your made to order curtain to be 2″ to 3″ below the window frame.
Always measure at least twice to ensure you have recorded the correct measurement.
