Even once you’ve got past the starting-up stage, there are
still plenty mistakes to be made, and most of them are going
to be made in your make-or-break year — the first one. Here
are the top five things to avoid.

Waiting for Customers to Come to You.

Too many people wait for their customers to phone, or come
to the door, or whatever. They get one or two customers
through luck, but nothing like enough to even begin paying
their costs. These people sit around, looking at their
competitors doing lots of business, and wonder what
they’re doing wrong.

You can’t be like this. You have to go out there and
actively try to find customers. Talk to people, call them,
meet with them — whatever you do, don’t just sit there!

Spending Too Much on Advertising.

So everyon’e tells you that the only way to get ahead in
business is to advertise. Well, that’s true, but you need
to make sure that you stick to inexpensive advertising
methods when you’re starting out. Spending hundreds of
dollars for an a’d in the local newspaper might turn out to
get you very few new customers, and you will have spent
your entire advertising budget on it.

Make your money go further with leaflets, direct mail or
email — these are easily targetable campaign methods with
high response rates and low costs. Remember that it is
always better to spend money on an offer than on an a’d, and
always better to spend money on an a’d than on a delivery
method.

Being Too Nice.

When you’re running your own business, it can be tempting
to be everyon’e’s frien’d, giving discounts at the drop of a
hat and making sure that you don’t hassle or inconvenience
anyone. That’s all well and good, until you find that your
Good Samaritan act has just halved your profit margin
without lowering the cost to the customer by very much at
all.

Sometimes, you need to realise that you’ve got to be harsh
to make a profit. Give people discounts to encourage them to
bu’y or to come back, not because you like them or feel sorry
for them. Don’t be afraid to be ruthless in your pursuit of
home business success. Nice guys don’t finish last, but
they are running in a different race — one with much less
prize money. If that doesn’t bother you, of course, then
feel FRE’E to go for it.

Not Using the Phone.

You’d be surprised just how common phone fears are — if
you’re scared of the phone, you’re not alone by any
means. Many people are terrified of making phone calls, and
avoid them wherever possible. I have seen more than one home
business owner reduced to tears on the phone and trying
desperately to hide it from the customer.

You need to try your best to overcome your fears, as
talking to customers on the phone is almost as good as
meeting them for real. Letters and emails are useless by
comparison. The best way to overcome phone fears varies
from person to person, but it can often be as simple as
making the phone fun, by calling friends and relatives
often for a while and getting used to it. Alternatively,
try working in telemarketing for a while — if that
doesn’t make normal phone use look like a walk in the park
by comparison, then nothing will.

Hiring Professionals for Everything.

It can be tempting to think that, since you’re starting
out, you should just find a company or person to do every
little thing you need. People seem to especially overspend
on design services.

You might think it’d be great to have fancy graphics all
over your website, but would it really increase sale’s? If I
saw it, it would put me right off. Likewise, a slick
brochure often fails to say anything more than ‘I’m going
to charge you a premium to pay for my expensive brochures’.
Don’t hire someone unless you can demonstrate that the
service they’re going to provide will increase your
profit’s by more than the amount you’re spending — if
you’re not sure, try it yourself first, and you can always
upgrade it later.

Television or TV as we abridge it to is an extensively used telecommunications process for delivering & receiving moving images & sound, or as we more usually know it as, television series. Commercially present ever since the 1930’s the television set has turn out to be a regular home connections piece of equipment in homes & companies, principally as a supply of entertainment & news bulletins. Since the 1970s video recording on VCR tapes & later, digital playback devices such as Digital Versatile Discs, have made it possible for the telly to be used to watch pre-recorded nature programs and other channels.

TV’ devices are constructed out of a selection of parts so a television screen which is deficient of an interior tuner to get the broadcast signals is named a monitor instead of a TV. As the future is now, tellies have moved on a little & technology has advanced, tellies currently are assembled to attain different telly broadcasts or video arrangements, like that of high definition televisions generally referred to as HDTV. When High Definition Televisions were initially available to buy they were very costly, but in our day it’s achievable to pick-up discounted televisions from most shops. Such as a 37″ plasma telly could have one time have cost you £1,000 it is now feasible to get hold of 1 up for a vast amount less than this, you will observe that a substantial number of Plasma widescreens TV’s have reduced a long way in worth when considered to a handful of years ago.

There are two forms of TVs in our day, plasma and LCD both are exceptionally similar but very distinct as well. Plasma is a sort of flat panel screen that you will normally only notice on large television displays, which essentially means you will not be able to buy plasma in anything smaller than a thirty seven inch. Plasma displays in there fundamental form are just gas cylinders. You then have LCD displays which you can acquire in any size & they can what’s more be used as computer VDUs. If you are looking for bargain televisions then why not visit the Digital Direct website.

Hybrid cars cost about $5,000 more than
non-hybrids. In addition, hybrids involve two
systems - the extra electrical components (electric
motor, charging system, batteries, etc.) and most
all the components of a gasoline car. Such vehicles
increase the potential for repairs from the additional
system.

The Japanese and Europeans have micro cars that
are fuel efficient. At this time, however, they are not
offered to Americans.

Diesels are an alternative. BMW has a 320di with 160
horsepower. It gets about 50 mpg and goes 0-60 is
about 8.1 seconds. However, this car is not imported
into the United States.

Kia and Hyundai are rising in quality, but their prices
are coming up just under pricey Toyota and Honda cars.

The cost of transportation can be expensive, and higher
fuel prices do not help matters. The following used
vehicles have good ratings, are reasonably priced,
and they will help lower fuel usage and thus costs.

1. The Toyota Corolla has been around for
over 30 years. During the last few years,
the Corolla has become a bit larger. Expect
to achieve about 30 miles per gallon (mpg)
in the city and about 40 mpg on the highway
with this vehicle.

2. The Honda Civic has been a stiff rival to
the Corolla. The Civic has also recently
grown a bit in size. The Civic is right there
with the Corolla at about 30 mpg in the city
and about 40 mpg on the highway.

3. The Geo Prizm will cost about $1,000-
$1,500 less than a comparable year
Corolla or Civic. The Prizm will achieve
about 29 mpg city and about 38 mpg on
the highway.

SUVs can really eat the fuel, however, they
are convenient for hauling cargo, and some
definitely have a real advantage in bad weather
and off-road conditions.

4. The Suzuki Esteem wagon provides some
cargo-carrying ability and reasonable fuel
economy. Expect to achieve about 28 mpg
in the city and about 37 mpg on the highway
with this vehicle.

5. The Subaru Legacy wagon/Outback wagon
and Forester can all carry cargo plus they
have all-wheel drive. These vehicles generally
have the most powerful engines out of those
mentioned above. Expect to achieve about
22 mpg in the city and about 27 mpg on the
highway.

If you are in the market for a vehicle, be certain
to do your homework. Consult the April (automotive
issue) of “Consumer Reports.” This resource
is available at most public libraries.

If you plan on buying a used vehicle, also be
sure to read a couple of archived new vehicle
road tests (review road tests that were conducted
at the time the vehicle was new) on the used vehicle
of interest in auto magazines (many are archived
at your local library) or Internet sources such as
“Car and Driver,” “Motor Trend,” “Road & Track,”
or “MotorWeek.” Information from the road tests
will allow you to zero in on which of the vehicles
discussed above will be the best for you.

Last, but not least, be certain that you do not
overpay to drive a fuel-efficient vehicle. For
example, if you pay say $1,500 more for a vehicle
that achieves five mpg more than your current
vehicle, you would need to drive it about three years
to get $1,500 in fuel savings. However, say
you pay an extra $500 for a vehicle that achieves
10 mpg more than your current vehicle. In a little
over six months, you would recoup your $500.

We have done some research on the term corporate treadmill test and the results are quite confusing. Many different types of sites use this keyword, each of which have a different definition. This page is simply to brief you on the different meanings.

First meaning

The first meaning to “corporate treadmill test” is the more logical one. In fact, it is literally a treadmill test that corporations do on their employees and future employees. Not all companies enforce a treadmill test; however, it can be beneficial for the tested individual.

Some companies care much about the well being of its staff and will encourage a health and fitness test. They will typically look for any signs and symptoms for cardiovascular, diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol.

By incorporating a treadmill test, employees will find out if there is any intermediate to high risk in their health. The treadmill test is also called an exercise stress test. The examiners slowly yet gradually increase the speed while examining the health performance of an employee.

There are many debates whether a corporate treadmill test should be encouraged or not, but there are many health experts that have their own opinion to this matter.

Second meaning

The second meaning to this term is not so much a fitness test, but rather a test on the treadmills themselves. Some sites will use this keyword as a way to describe their reviews on certain treadmill brands. It’s perhaps a way of giving them better credibility.

We feel this way because this search term is often used; however there is no fitness site that explains the meaning of this term. It’s almost as if they used the term as a test they have done on treadmills to increase their integrity.

There isn’t any concrete information on the internet regarding a corporate treadmill test. We hope to have clarified the meaning of this often searched term.

Chad Bitar and Alain Chan are Electrical and Computer Engineers who are in the process of obtaining their C.S.C.S certification. They have devoted their time in providing reviews on fitness equipment such as treadmills, elliptical trainers, and exercise bikes. Name That Tree

I’m native to the European Alps, you know, where the great discovery of Otzi, the 5,300-year old man was made in 1991, and also the Balkan mountains, as well as the Carpathians near the Black Sea. My normal range extends north to the country which gives me my name and I merge with the “obovata” specie of my genus in northern Russia. Introduced to the British Isles as early as 1500 AD, I am now widely planted in North America, particularly in the northeastern United States.

I have quite a range if I say so myself: I grow well in in southern Canada from Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia all the way across to Vancouver Island. In America, I grow well in the Pacific Coast states, and in the Rocky Mountains. I’m in naturalized populations from Connecticut to Michigan and where altitude makes it cool for me, I’ll grow in the mountains of the Appalachians as far south as Georgia as well as New Mexico and Arizona’s northern mountains.

I grow with fir trees, or with hickory and oak trees, as well as maple, beech and birch trees, or aspen and birch trees. I grow quickly, especially when I’m young, the fastest of any of the trees in my taxonomic family.

My record height was in The Olympic National Park of Washington State at 143 feet, but my normal mature height in the area of http://www.highlandhillfarm.com southeastern Pennsylvania is 80 to 100 feet. My form or profile shape is conical with horizontal to upward sweeping branches that often droop small branchlets (”Profeeele” as Jackie Gleason’s best friend Ed Norton used to say on the classic TV comedy which ran from 1952-1969 constantly repeating the same 39 episodes). My drooping pendulous branchlets make a uniquely attractive sort of skirt, hanging straight down as much as several feet in length, especially on my upper limbs. This is a rare feature very few trees can say they have. Leaves on my branches are stiff, 1/2 to 1 inch long, 4-angled but somewhat flattened, with a sharp pointed tip, shiny deep green and a mere sixteenth of an inch in diameter. Each one is borne on a raised, woody peg (sterigma). Diameter, you ask? Are my leaves the needles of an evergreen tree?

My flowers are monoecious; males are yellow-brown in large groups with my females upright, and purple-colored.

My fruits are very large, almost cylindrical cone-shapes, 4 to 6 inches long, with stiff, thin scales that are irregularly toothed, chestnut brown, maturing in fall.

My branches have twigs which are slender to medium in size, lacking “hair,” tree fur, with a shiny orangish red-brown surface. The leaves or needles are borne on woody pegs with buds that are very loose. The orange-brown scales resemble a rose. As my twigs develop into full branches my bark progresses from the orange red-brown into darker and darker shades eventually becoming a flaking scaly gray with plates as much as a few inches in area that can fall off. Just like people all continually lose their outer later of skin, you could say I too “exfoliate.” Soil requirements I make are rather liberal. I prefer moist, well-drained, acidic sort of soil which can be loamy to sandy. But I’ll grow well in dry, rocky, even claylike (argillaceous, you could say and impress your friends) ground too. I grow most anywhere, just check my range again, as I described above. Okay, so I won’t grow in the desert. Or in a swamp, on the other side of the coin, the other end of the spectrum I WILL DIE if the ground is overly WET. I like rain. You see, we trees can like water, enjoying lotsa rain, while NOT wanting soil that stays wet. There is a difference for us there. Please note, I am ESPECIALLY drought tolerant. You don’t have to worry about watering me. Partial shade is okay, even if I do prefer full sun. I’ll grow happily in hardiness zones 3 through 7, where the coldest temperatures can get as low as 40 degrees BELOW Zero, or relatively mild winter lows get down to just 10 degree above zero, like in Virginia or Kentucky. For Bucks County, in southeastern Pennsylvania, my temperature preferences are positively perfect (How’s that for a little alliteration? See, I’m a pretty smart tree too.) Insects and diseases generally don’t bother me. Only Cooley Spruce Gall Aphids will get me and mess up my flowers, my cones, and the spider mites which bother other trees can affect me too. Yet, these two troublemakers don’t come near to killing me. I’m relatively inexpensive to purchase as compared to imported fruit trees. I make a great landscaping tree, I’m proud to say I’m ornamental, and make a great windbreak or snowbreak along walkways and driveways. So, whaddya say? Ya got enough information fer sure. What tree am I? If you think you know go to my web site at http://www.seedlingsrus.com and get my email address. Email me the answer and when you come to our farm I will give you a free one. We have 500 these trees to give out by Feb. 27th 2006. (Residents of Doylestown Township will get a free tree even if they guess wrong.)

Headlines are short vital statements to stimulate your potential customers and clients to take action. That means sales! Since you only have 10 seconds to attract your visitor or reader, create headlines to make ultimate sales.

Your benefit-driven headlines are your 24/7 sales team working for your while you relax your favorite way.

Without them, your ezine ads, email promotions, special reports, eBooks, book and article titles, chapter titles, ezines and print newsletters, and Web site will not pull visitor attention, trust, credibility, traffic or sales.

Headlines bring far more sales than the copy following them. Perhaps you are a skimmer too. Skimmers usually just read the headline.

How to Use Headlines

1. EZINE ADS

Many businesses write ads and place them in strategic ezines or Web sites. They lose contacts and sales because they don’t use a benefit-driven headline at the top of the ad. For instance, “YOU CAN WRITE A PROFITABLE BOOK IN LESS THAN 30 DAYS! or HIGH TRAFFIC=HIGH WEB SALES.”

Start with the benefit in capital letters. Make a free offer to get people to visit your Web site. Include contact information in hyper links. Make your ad 5-7 lines. Don’t pitch what you are selling in the ad–this doesn’t motivate.

2. SUBJECT LINE IN YOUR OUTGOING EMAIL

Make sure your headline includes a benefit for the product, the teleclass, the seminar or service you are promoting. Over 50% of outgoing messages are never opened because the subject line doesn’t inspire or stimulate the audiences’ curiosity.

So many professionals just put an announcement in the subject line such as “Upcoming Programs.” Not specific enough, nor motivating enough to make me want to open the email.

Here’s a few winners: Quadruple your Sales in 4 Months with Articles Teleclass, FREE report: Online Marketing is 10 Times More Powerful than Traditional, or for an ezine, don’t just put its name in subject line, put its feature article in with a abbreviated ezine name and ….

3. FREE SPECIAL REPORTS AND ARTICLES

These 2-6 page informational, how-to pieces help promote your business Online. Send one every month or so to follow up your email group lists.

Your article title is your headline. Best titles include a benefit and audience. People want to know what’s in for them before they invest their valuable time to read it. Don’t lose them with a weak title. Which of these are powerful? “10 Tips to Promote your Product with Flyers.” “Shorten your Journey to Business Success with Teleclasses.” “Want a Web Site that Turns Lookie Loos into Buyers?”

Within the body of the piece use headlines to inspire and motive the reader to keep reading to get their questions answered. The reason they read your article is to learn how to solve their problem. Headlines organize and guide your reader to make it easy for him/her to read. With appreciation for your useful article they may click on your product or service to buy you offer in your signature file at the bottom.

Within “The BIG 3 Marketing Machine” report, this headline pulls reader action: “Leverage your Sales Through a Short Headline.”

When you add zesty, power-packed headlines to anything your write or use to promote yourself and your business, you will attract your target potential buyers who evolve into buyers. Part two of this article is available; contact Judy@bookcoaching.com.

“If at first you don’t succeed, then skydiving definitely isn’t for you.”

Thank goodness starting an office cleaning business isn’t anything like skydiving! If
you fall flat on your face, there’s no chance that it’s going to hurt that bad. Learning
to handle the inevitable occurrence of rejection to the best of your ability will help
you refine your office cleaning business and your business techniques.

Rejection is simply par for the course when you first start an office cleaning
business — it will happen occasionally. So instead of hoping that it never will, it’s
good for your business health to come up with some strategies to handle it, learn
from it and even grow your office cleaning business with that knowledge. As you
start an office cleaning business, aim to minimize your experiences of rejection,
while at the same time, be prepared for it.

Reasons for Rejection.

Not “clicking” with your client when you first start an office cleaning business can be
cause for rejection somewhere down the line. An initial awkwardness between you
may just never go away, and could result in the end of that job. Or you may take on
a new client but you feel some anxiety on their part about your fees. They may hire
you for one or two sessions, and then tell you they aren’t interested in having you
back.

When we first started an office cleaning business we had a continual scheduling
problem with one office manager, who changed her cleaning date many times
during the holiday season. We were as flexible as we could be with her, changing
our other clients’ scheduled dates around in order to accomodate her several times.
But when it came to settling on a regular cleaning date, this person could not be
flexible with us. Funny thing was, Ev and I just knew something wasn’t right with
this particular job from the start. We hadn’t ever really “clicked” with her, so the
schedule problem became bigger than it should have been.

Be aware that scheduling is one of the most important elements of starting an office
cleaning business. Get it right with your clients, and you’ve got a good opportunity
to keep your clients happy. Get it wrong with them, and you may find yourself
moving on.

Superficial concerns like personal style, or appearance, can be a cause for rejection.
People’s perceptions are very important. We’re not saying those perceptions are
right or wrong, only that they’re important. When Evan started to get serious about
making good money with his office cleaning business, he cut his shoulder-length
hair short. His business picked up.

People do make snap judgments on appearances. It’s just a game. If we want the
business, we have to play by the rules of the game. We’re aware that there are a lot
of flaky office cleaners out there who disappoint their clients regularly. You’ll
succeed by playing against the stereotypes. Dress well (as well as you can
considering the nature of this job–you do get dirty on occasion), always be on
time, and communicate well with your clients.

What to Say If and When it Happens.

Let’s say your new client, Mrs. C, calls you on the day after your birthday. Feeling
fine as you pick up the receiver, you assume for a moment that she’s calling about
your schedule. But her voice is quavering, and she proceeds to tell you that she
thinks you are charging too much. Her company no longer wants to do business
with you. She’s nervous, which makes you suddenly nervous. The conversation is
awkward for you both.

You don’t know what to say except, “thank you for your call, I appreciate your
honesty. It’s been a pleasure to work for you. Have a nice day.” (Please note: I have
actually told people to have a nice day, but seeing it in print makes me cringe. Trust
me, you’ll think of something better to say.)

While you’ll never like losing a client, be honest with yourself. Would you want to
clean Mrs. C’s office for less? Would it be worth your time and effort?

So, when Mrs. C calls, you decide. If you want the job enough to lower your
fee, ask if she would be interested in re-negotiating. But if you realize that you
simply can’t do that job at a lowered fee, then say a little mental thank you to her.
She’s opened up your schedule for another, better client to come along. And you
can see how important it is to try and set the fees right at the time of the estimate.

Keep up your marketing campaign.

Do not agonize over it, just do it. And be on the alert while talking to the people in
your daily life. Let them know what you do. Ask them for referrals. Many people
don’t realize how extraordinarily helpful your average person can be. So just ask.
Sometimes that’s all it takes. Don’t allow yourself to skate along smugly on the thin
ice of your regular schedule. Something out-of-the-blue could always happen.

Marketing consistently is especially important during the first three or four months
when you start an office cleaning business. It doesn’t take much time to continually
sow the fields of your daily bread this way. Then when a client drops into the abyss
you can call the people who are patiently waiting for your schedule to loosen up so
you can fit them in, and reap the harvest.

Workplace Trends.

This is a good time to mention that in accordance with the latest workplace trends,
even employees with seemingly secure jobs are being advised never to get too
comfy. “Always be prepared to move on to your next job,” is the advice of career
counselors, who also recommend that employees be discreet about looking for
another job while at work. Companies have no loyalty to their employees, and in the
current economy you never know when companies may be forced to downsize.

How does this translate into language for self-employed people like you and me?
“Always be prepared to move on to your next job.” It’s exactly the same advice.
Except, unlike employees with other companies, you and I do not have to be covert
about it. It’s both smart and natural for self-employed people to always keep a keen
lookout for new clients. It’s all considered intelligent networking.

Shift happens.

As you start an office cleaning business you’ll learn that it isn’t simply that people
are fickle and unpredictable, although they can be both those things. Your clients
are working under the same strenuous system as you, and they are as susceptible to
job loss, solar flares, family crises, illness and temporary insanity as you are. So be
kind to your clients. Even when they can you for no good reason that you can see.
Forgive them, forget them, then go on and market some more.
